If you would prowl for spelling bee words, Tristram Shandy is a good place to look. I saw succedaneum on a Starbucks cup jacket this morning, and once again fell into the "nobody uses that word" trap. Not eight hours later I read in Volume VI, chapter 23, in a passage concerning Uncle Toby and Corporal Trim's scale models of besieged fortresses constructed on Toby's bowling green:
Something therefore was wanting, as a succedaneum, especially in one or two of the more violent paroxysms of the siege, to keep up something like a continual firing in the imagination...
This passage is not far from another that features another bee bugaboo of mine, pococurante.
